In the 90s you toured with Nirvana. So you actually met Kurt Cobain!
We toured with Nirvana twice. The first one was in 1991 in Britain, in the UK. The second one was an American tour.
When we went to UK, Kurt Cobain wanted to play our song called “Twist Barbie.” He asked me how to play the guitar, with the chords. I taught him how to play. He was a real gentleman. His eyes are very deep blue, and very clear. Very pure.
You are from Osaka. How is the music scene there like?
The Music scene in Osaka is very, very tiny compared to Tokyo. Bands are more independent and DIY and more free. There are many major recording companies in Tokyo so bands in Tokyo like to be famous.
But many bands in Osaka don’t have the same opportunity. They just enjoy the music. It’s more rock [than Tokyo].
Would you say that you are a good representation of the Osaka Rock scene?
I think so. Ha ha ha! We wrote a song, “My Favorite Town.” It’s about Osaka. I think we are real different from J-pop because that is in Japanese language.
In our case, we have bilingual lyrics. Our songs has English and Japanese lyrics. And for me, English is really for rock music. The Japanese language is very short, cut cut cut. But English is more wavey, so it’s more suitable for our music.
Any other Japanese acts that you recommend?
I like Acid Mother Temple. It’s very psychedelic.
