TECHNIQUE
Mayweather is a defensive genius: his hands are always up while his chin is always tucked into his shoulders. On offense, he can move in and out at an opponent or just counterpunch, using his fast hands and feet to throw punches then slipping away before his opponent can react. From a technical standpoint, it’s a thing of beauty to watch. For casual fight fans, it can get boring.
He’s also great at adjusting his strategy in the middle of a fight and has even boasted that he didn’t need to study any tapes, or prepare a special game plan against Marquez. He’ll just adjust once they’re in the ring.
Marquez started as a pure counterpunching machine but has since turned into a boxer-fighter (read: if the opportunity comes, he will slug it out). Nacho Beristain is a master strategist, and, undoubtedly, he will instruct his boxer to throw body punches at Mayweather, jab a lot, apply pressure, and overwhelm him with a barrage of blows. It’s only a question of which approach will be more effective during the fight.
WHO’S GOING TO WIN
Fact is, both Mayweather and Marquez are largely counter punchers, which tells us that the fight may turn out to be a snooze-fest.
Here’s what we think will happen: Marquez will go hard at Mayweather at the opening bell. Mayweather may get a bit rattled but will find a way to control the tempo and impose his will and size advantage against the Mexican. And then, when he senses that he’s ahead on the judges’ scorecards, Mayweather will employ his trusted hit-and-get-out tactic until the final bell rings.
And if that happens, it’s going to be Mayweather via unanimous decision.
WHO WE WANT TO WIN
Honestly, we’re rooting for the underdog Marquez. And we have three reasons why:
1 If Marquez wins, it means the fight will possibly be an all-out, action-packed slugfest
2 If Marquez wins, Mayweather’s famously irreverent mouth will finally be shut. And lastly…
3 If Marquez wins, another Pacquiao fight should be in the offing—and everyone knows what a great fight that will be
