Capricciosa
G/F Fox Square bldg., 53 Connecticut St., Greenhills, San Juan
Tel. 744 0490
Quiz nights Wednesdays 9 PM

Who comes here: The younger crowd—college kids and older kids in their mid-20s and 30s
Why you should swing by: If you live on the north side of Manila, Capricciosa is, so far, the only bar that holds quiz nights in the area. Plus, their happy hour starts at 9 PM every night. The food is student’s-allowance affordable, but still good. Try their buffalo wings and nachos.
How they’re quizzed: Just as at 121, participants at Capricciosa write their answers on placards, raise these, and wait for quiz master and Capricciosa co-owner Will Tan to shout at them, “You win!” There are three rounds—easy, medium, and difficult—of questions that include a lot about the movies.
Prizes: The winning team gets two bottles of wine and a Capricciosa gift certificate. Each winner of each round gets a round of shots.
What to expect: Quizzer Will says the general attitude of their participants on quiz nights is “crazy.” And it actually is. The excited babble even before the quiz starts is above normal level already, and yet, this is considered a “quiet night.” Perhaps that’s because the place is smaller and intimate, and filled with the energy of youth.
What you should do to get those bottles of wine: Check out TMZ.com for celebrity gossip—that’s where Capricciosa gets its celeb questions. You may memorize your high school geography book or read the almanac, but in the spirit of fun and fairness, rely on stock knowledge and just pray that your friends know a lot more than you.

Panama Jack
A.Venue, Makati Ave., Makati City
Tel. 408 7146
Quiz nights Wednesdays 9 PM

Who comes here: Lots of expats, plus trivia veterans who hop from quiz bar to quiz bar, on a quest to dominate the Universe of Trivia.
Why you should swing by: Panama Jack’s owners are in the process of looking for sponsors to spring a trip to Boracay for the champion team at the grand finals.
How they’re quizzed: Panama Jack’s quiz rules are aplenty. Contestants scribble on provided answer sheets, each team can have a maximum of eight members; there’s a fun round and a jackpot round, where the two brainiest teams face off. Each player pays P50 to join quiz night. Questions revolve around TV and—whoops!—the bible.
Prizes: The first round’s winners get a bottle of whiskey; the second, a P200 gift certificate for each team member; the third, a bottle of wine. The players’ joining fees go into the pot, 20 percent of which goes into the grand prize at the grand finals, end of October. The rest of the pot is won by the night’s winning team.
What to expect: It’s an international crowd at Panama Jack. So there’s a bit of Asian, European, and American trivia in the rounds. Quiz master/DJ Erik Waldie is Canadian and it’s a sacrifice for him not to put in more hockey questions. Since he’s also a radio DJ, expect quiz nights at Panama Jack to be lively, to say the least.
What you should do to get that pot of cash: Read the newspapers for current events. Erik believes that “everyone can answer a LaToya Jackson question but no one can answer a Bible question.” So brush up on your catechism, too.
